Bronte / Shirley £35 or $55 or 43 Euros Postfree-By-Airmail Worldwide
Published by Smith, Elder, 1897, London. Green
cloth hardback in ,at best, about "Fair Plus" to
"Good" condition with a some
loosening of front hinge, but an interesting
association exemplar.
Formerly the property of the sculptress Barbara
(Crystal) Collingwood, with her ownership
inscription, "Barbara Crystal Collingwood,
February 21st. 1901", on recto of first free
endpaper.
This item came from the library of the church
architect Janet Gnosspelius, daughter of the
geologist Oscar Gnosspelius and Barbara
Collingwood.
Most members of the interrelated Collingwood and
Gnosspelius families played inspirational parts
in Arthur Ransome's writings.
Arthur Ransome had once proposed to Barbara,
without success, but he still dedicated Old
Peter's Russian Tales (1916) to her.
This item may have been part of a planned (or
possibly executed) project to illustrate the
novel professionally. The title page has in
pencil "With illustrations by Barbara C.
Collingwood", and there are the remains of
tipped-in stubs throughout, on pages matching
a rough list of their pagination, also in pencil,
on the verso of the first free endpaper.

We have had lots of buying customers from Manchester and the midlandsn in the shop today. Cookery, history, literary criticism and Second World War have all gone well. Quite a bit of science has gone from the website too. The bargain ginnel has just been topped up with a number of history books. Tomorrow morning should see some activity there. ...
