"In this book, the author combines the
discussion of metaethics
and substantive moral philosophy, while drawing
on traditional
philosophical insights, recently elaborated
techniques of philosophical
analysis, and game and economic theory. A general
theory of the meaning
of sentences using 'reasons for action' and
related terminology is
developed, which indicates how a propositional
analysis of such sentences
can also illuminate their practical use and
psychological
influence on our actions. The discussion covers
issues of
sentence meaning and speech acts, but also
includes important
questions of philosophical psychology (the nature
of regret,
guilt and shame), and shows how empirical
theories of moral
psychology (those of Freud and Piaget, for
example) can clarify,
and be clarified, philosophical theory. The
central feature of
this work is its construction of a general theory
of rationality
and morality, and its attempt to formulate a
structure of action
guiding principles which make specific the
requirements that
those concepts impose on our conduct. Substantive
questions of leg
al, political, and personal morality are
discussed and an account
given of social rules, rights, duties and
obligation. Finally, an
answer is sought to the question 'Why be moral?'"
crisp/clean copy of an infrequently encountered
